For troubled high-school student Ben Olson, life in the mild autumn of 1944 brims with the fears shared by every family in war-weary America. He longs for the safe return of his father, and the love of Annie Stewart, the girl of his dreams.

A budding writer, Ben finds an old typewriter in the attic, only to discover the Regal 8 is no ordinary one. It’s heavy, black, and mysterious, and shortly after typing a story on it—a story that contains a cartoonish sunflower—the very same sunflower appears in the attic. It’s certainly real, looks harmless enough, yet has a disgusting smell … and flourishes not in sunlight, but in darkness.
